29 September: Good Morning, Malaysia

 

SERDANG, 29 September - As we all know, the saying goes, ‘don’t be a tourist, be a traveller’. What makes a tourist different from a traveller is the depth of the experience that they encounter. Not only seeing what it is presented for foreigners to see but also witnessing the side of a country that is a common and not promoted. Provided that, Buddies Association UPM with the co-operation of i-Putra had held a program called Good Morning Malaysia! The following is a program is an activity that takes international students into the norm of the local. This is achieved by participating in casual activities that is carried out by Malaysian.

The program that started at 8.00 am headed first to the Pasar Tani in MAEPS, Serdang. There arrays of local product awaits the participants. Here, the participants can see the shape of a Malaysian household. From the cooking ingredients to beauty products, items sold at this market allows the participants to see the shopping habits of the locals. They also took the advantage to buy some local products such as fruits. They also tasted common Malaysian snack like Deram-deram and drinks like Longan juice.

Next, they were led to Gerai Pak Usop. There, there were serve abundance off food commonly consumed by Malaysian as breakfast. They get to try much kind of flatbreads like Roti Kosong, Roti Pisang and Roti Sardin. They also get to feast on dishes like Nasi Lemak and Char Kuey Teow. There were very intrigued by the difference of a western pancake to our Lempeng. Also not to forget the most important part of a Malaysian breakfast, Teh Tarik. Bringing them to such stall not only allows students to taste the authenticity of the Malaysian breakfast, but such open kitchen stall allows them to witness how food like Roti Canai and Teh Tarik is prepared.

Done feasting, they head back to i-Putra for a movie session. This time around, the movie Tale n Time by the late Yasmin Ahmad was chosen. This movie was chosen not only based on its achievement on the 22nd Malaysia Film Festival, bagging 4 awards including Best Director, Best Screen play, Best Promising actress and a special jury award, but also because of how well it represented the people of our community.  The story of a bunch of school students auditioning for their school Talentime competition is hoped to bring enrichment towards participants of how a Malaysian community works.

The event ended at 2.00 pm with everyone leaving fully satisfied. Buddies Association UPM will always work into providing more beneficial activities for students in UPM.
