IFTAR GATHERING BRINGS TOGETHER INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND UPM MANAGEMENT

UPM Serdang, 16 June 2017. UPM’s International Centre (i-Putra), in collaboration with UPM International Students Association (UPM ISA), hosted an iftar gathering for international students at the CALC Hall, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, here today.

The gathering was held to celebrate the communal spirit of the holy month of Ramadan by bringing together international students who are fasting away from home and the management and staff of the university.   Among the management staff of the university who came to break fast with the students were the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, the Secretary General of UPM Alumni Association, Tuan Haji Ghazali Selamat, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Prof. Dr. Robiah Yunus, the Deputy Dean of SGS, Prof. Dr. Nor Aini Shukor, and the Deputy Director of Putra International, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noritah Omar.

More than a hundred international students attended the event, which began with a Quranic recitation and tazkirah session led by student representatives, followed by a light iftar and communal Maghrib prayer.  After the Maghrib prayer, the guests enjoyed the main course and were entertained with songs performed by Nahwan Nur. The event concluded with a photography session.

Muktar Nuhu Danraka, a PhD student in Structural Engineering, summed up the success of the event. “It’s good that we international students are able to meet to break fast together, and also to meet with the university management.  This sense of togetherness is wonderful, especially in the month of Ramadan,” he said.  “I hope more such gatherings with the university management can be held for international students in the future,” he continued.

According to the Deputy Director of i-Putra, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noritah Omar, the iftar gathering will be held as an annual event. “The International Centre would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the UPM ISA for collaborating with us and helping us to organise the event”, she added.
